The
Wellenstein Family of Upstate NY
John
M. Wellenstein, son of Konrad and Katherine (Mander) Wellenstein,
was born in Sand (now Emstal) a province of Hesse-Kassel Germany
on February 12, 1852.
Katherine Rice came to US with her parents in 1858. She was
the daughter of Jacob and Eliza Rice. She was born May 25, 1855
Germany. She was married December 04, 1873 in Utica, NY to John
M. Wellensten.
"I have heard that he had a twin brother who died young, but
cannot verify this. He married Katy Rice who was also born
in Germany and came to America with her parents when she was
3 years old. She spent her childhood at Salisbury, NY. They
spent most of their married life in Cedarville, NY. In the
1875 census his occupation was listed as 'mason'. When in
his 30s, he became crippled with 'rheumatism' and was unable
to work. At one time he was overseer of the poor.
Silas
Kimm wrote in his 'Memories of Early Ilion,' (The Evening
Telegram, Herkimer-Ilion, NY 1948): 'John Wollenstein came
from Hesse 84 years ago. The one thing I recall about him,
he brought with him a tobacco pipe more than a foot long.
He married Kate Rice and their decendants are large land owners
in the Town of Litchfield."
(from "The Wellenstein Family and The Jacob & Eliza Rice Family"
compiled by Grace W. Brown in 1977)
Their son John R. Wellenstein born April 17, 1875 married Edna
May Rose, great granddaughter of Orion Rose, and Abigail Morgan
Rose. Edna Rose Wellenstein was also great-granddaughter of
Hezekiah Cole born September 23, 1765 Foster, RI (a descendant
of Cole of Plymouth)
My
line of Wellensteins lived in the area of Columbia, Chepatchet,
Cedarville, and West Winfield most of their lives and are buried
in the Cedarville
Cemetery, Herkimer County, NY.
